Chef Bernard Althaus-Basilic, Balboa Island

When Bernard Althaus first came to the U.S. from his native Switzerland, it wasn’t to serve plates of Raclette to the OC Conservatives on Balboa Island.  He was actually here as a member of the French Team sailing in the America’s Cup.  Bernard grew up on Lake Geneva (the worlds largest alpine lake) and had been sailing his entire youth. He had also decided at a very young age that food would be a big part of his life.

 

M.F.K. Fisher, Writer on the Art of Food and the Taste of Living

 

On the death of the writer, M.F.K. Fisher, June 24, 1992, in a byline by her friend and colleague Molly O’Neill these words of remembrance appeared in the New York Times marked Late Edition-Final.  Irony, perhaps, apropos.

 

M.F.K. Fisher, the writer whose artful personal essays about food created a genre, died on Monday at her home on the Bouverie Ranch in Glen Ellen, California.  She was 83 years old.
